Build 2 | Semana 1: o resumo (PT/EN)

Build 2 | Week 1: summary

After a rest week, returned to training with renewed form and motivation. The races are approaching and it is time to rise the intensity and the requirement of the longest trainings on the road.

After a rest and recovery week that I missed a lot, I returned to trainimg last week, refreshed and motivated.

In compliance with the principle of training progressivity, the value of FTP was again raised to 275W, ie 4.6W / kg.

With the races coming closer, in this mesocycle Build 2 the goal is to maintain a high but stable training volume, and increase the intensity, bringing the training closer to what will be the competition requirements.

Thus, the week began with a training in zone 4 (treshold) similar to those that had already been doing in the previous mesocycle, that is, 5 intervals of 6 minutes with recovery between series of 1/4 of this time. A demanding training, but despite the increase in the value of FTP, I was able to fit with relative ease.

The sweetspot workouts are to keep up throughout the season so, being the first week with new FTP, I did a workout that included only a 40 minute interval on that zone.

The novelty in this mesocycle is the introduction of zone 5 (VO2max) training, to raise the intensity to levels that we easily reach in some stahes of the race. I choose to do these exercises again in the laboratory (turbo-trainer) where I can more easily control the power and the time within the desired intervals. They are 5 intervals with duration between 3 to 6 minutes and recovery between intervals with the same duration. Being the first week of this cycle, I started with 5 intervals of 3 minutes with recovery between sets in zone 1 for 3 minutes. They are short but very demanding workouts, where we easily end up completely exhausted.

The remaining sessions of the week were short and at lower intensity (only a few peaks in Saturday session), since for Sunday was planned a long workout on the road, which in terms of mileage and elevation gain in much resembles what I will find on April 14, at Montemuro Granfondo.

There were 125 km with 3000m of elevation gain, done at an intensity close to what will be the race day. The main difficulties were the climbs to S. Macário (9 km to 9%) and to Penoita (12 km to 5%), but mainly the effective management of the effort to be able to withstand the almost 5 hours of training without faltering. I felt good throughout all the training, even improving my times in the two climbs and in a few more segments I went through, which gives me a lot of confidence and motivation for the weeks that are yet to come and that will not be, at all, easier than this. It was certainly a good test!
